Top 3 Ways to Build Bulletproof Shoulders

Ever you ever had pain in your shoulder? Most commonly it’s in the front or top of the shoulder and when it hurts really bad will ache down the arm to the elbow. While shoulder pain can come from an acute injury such as a fall or a sharp pull in the arm, most times it starts to hurt more and more over time.

You notice the pain and try icing it and letting is calm down by resting and trying not to use it. It may feel a little better but a few weeks later we can’t reach the overhead cabinet, backseat of the car, or put a coat on without it hurting. If this sounds like you don’t worry, you don’t need a $2,000 MRI or orthopedic consult.

Commonly, years of muscle imbalance and poor movement has lead to this point. When someone comes to work with me for shoulder pain, we always address these three areas regardless of the root of the shoulder pain.

The Top 3 Ways to Build Bulletproof Shoulders

  1. Position- where the ball sits in the socket

The resting position of the ball in the socket drastically changes how much the shoulder move.

Don’t believe me? Sit up tall and reach overhead, now slouch and raise your arm overhead. Notice a difference?

Make sure the ball is sitting back in the socket with the center in line with your ear canal

  2. Rotation Strength

By far the most underused strategy to keep shoulders healthy and strong

Whether you are a ‘desk athlete’ or a ‘gym rat’, you NEED to be doing some shoulder rotation strength.

Make sure you start light and feel the muscle burn in the back of the shoulder.

Watch THIS VIDEO to make sure you are doing it correct

  3. Do you have mobility?

If you have pain, you won’t be able to reach overhead fully until the pain is resolved

If you don’t have pain, you need to have full mobility of the shoulder. Your body will adapt for so long, but it will catch up with you in the long run

Raise your arm overhead in the mirror. If you don’t have 170-180 degrees of movement of the shoulder THIS VIDEO is a good place to start.
